What is a File Sharing-Friendly Website?
It's become very clear
in the last couple of months that something needs to be done to help sim sites
stay afloat, in the face of huge costs incurred from high bandwidth. Bandwidth
is the data transfer from someone's website to your PC. Every graphic, all text
and all downloads raise the amount of data transferred to your PC, and web
providers charge heavily for it now.
It was with this in mind that the
Preservation of Bandwidth Society (POBS) was initiated by a sim forum called
N99. We hope that any creator who feels comfortable with the idea will now allow
us to share *original* zip files we download from their site. So, after you
download files from this site, please pass them along to a friend, or a couple
of friends, and then they get the great downloads BUT the webmaster of this site
doesn't get slammed with high bandwidth charges.
Please remember,
though, this does *not* imply permission to upload any of these files to another
website. Please refer to each individual webmaster's policy if you wish to do
something like this. This page is a generic one for all POBS members, and
anything posted by the webmaster of this site superceeds what's written here.
Another way this will work is by joining up with a sim-related forum,
and posting a request for a download buddy. This works by both buddies visiting
website and chatting about what they would like to download together. Then the
buddy that has done the downloading will send the zips over to the buddy on
chat.
Remember:
1) No distributing of pay site files! Period! This
also applied to donation items.
2) Send only intact zips with read-me
included, please. We want to make sure that creators get credit!
3) Be sure
that the sites you download from allow file-sharing.
4) File-share only
through email or IM. Putting files up on a server or website is not permitted.
5) PLEASE send an email or sign the guestbook of anyone you download from,
thanking them so that they know this is working and that others are enjoying
their creations.
6) Have fun! You may even make some new friends!
